The ultimate goal of exposure-response prevention in regard to Pure OCD is to reduce the anxiety associated with the thoughts of the sufferer. These thoughts generally have a negative impact and can often shock or scare the sufferer. The goal is that by preventing one's self from acting on the compulsions that come along with the thoughts. With repeated encounters with the thoughts while abstaining from the compulsions that come along with them comes a reduction in anxiety, this can be to the point where the obsessions themselves begin to decrease. Helplessness is one of the most debilitating aspects of trauma, so anything that restores a sense of control is helpful. 3) Guided imagery also provides instant comfort and is an effective tool for self-soothing, and having this tool is another way to restore a sense of control. 4) Guided imagery makes use of a skill they already have, the ability to dissociate, but gives this skill, born of trauma, a use that leads to healing. 5) It also helps survivors dissociate in a conscious way and become more aware of the process of spacing out, so to speak, and then, returning to full presence, becoming more grounded as a result.
